Focus on What You’re Already Good at.

I recently took some time to sit down and write a simple list. At the top of one page, I wrote Strengths, and at the top of another page, I wrote Weaknesses. As I delved into this exercise, I was surprised to discover that I was having very little trouble filling up the page listing all of the things about myself that I think I could be better at, my weaknesses. But listing my strengths proved to be more challenging. I just couldn’t see it.

So I did something that was difficult to me. I reached out to my partner, and some friends to tell me what they viewed in me as strengths. The people that I reached out to had no troubles coming up with and presenting to me a long list of bullet points about me that they thought I was great at. Funny how I live in this body, yet I was so troubled to notice these things themselves. It wasn’t hard to agree with what anyone had to say once they were in front of me. Sure, all those things are definitely things that I excel in, yet they were blind spots, and I needed someone else to see them and point them out in order for me to be able to see them and accept them as parts of me.

I did this exercise because I’m working on creating some new things in my life that are well out of my comfort zone, and fall far away from some of the older branches of my life that no longer reflect the person that I have grown to be. But because that journey into the unknown requires me to tap into unknown skills, I think it’s important to be aware of what I’m already good at, and leverage those things in order to help develop the new things that I need to know as I look towards the future and what it looks like.

So, in the pursuit of personal growth and development, we often find ourselves torn between two approaches: emphasizing and strengthening our existing skills or fixating on our weaknesses. Both paths have their merits, but understanding the balance between the two is crucial for fostering self-improvement and success. Focusing too much on our weaknesses is the fast track to making no progress towards anything that we truly desire. So I want to explore the benefits of working on our strengths while acknowledging the potential pitfalls of focusing excessively on our shortcomings.

One of the key advantages of working on strengthening the skills we already possess is the potential for accelerated growth. Building upon existing strengths provides a solid foundation to excel in various aspects of life, be it in our careers, personal relationships, or hobbies. By dedicating time and effort to refine our strengths, we can cultivate a sense of mastery and self-assurance, leading to increased confidence and overall satisfaction.

When we focus on what we are good at and enjoy doing, we tend to find greater passion and purpose in our endeavors. Embracing our strengths can help us uncover our true passions and align our lives with activities that bring us fulfillment and happiness. This alignment often leads to increased motivation and a higher level of engagement, making us more likely to persevere through challenges and achieve long-term success.

Strengthening our existing skills fosters a positive mindset. As we witness growth and progress, our confidence grows, and we develop a healthy outlook on our abilities. This optimistic perspective can spill over into other areas of our lives, promoting resilience and adaptability in the face of challenges. A positive mindset empowers us to approach obstacles with a “can-do” attitude, leading to greater problem-solving abilities and a higher likelihood of overcoming barriers.

While acknowledging and addressing weaknesses are essential for growth, fixating excessively on them can lead to a sense of inadequacy and self-doubt. Constantly focusing on what we lack may breed a negative self-image, hindering progress and diminishing the energy that could be directed towards nurturing strengths.

Rather than dismissing weaknesses, it is crucial to adopt a balanced approach to self-improvement. Understanding our areas for growth allows us to develop a well-rounded skill set, complementing our strengths and enhancing overall performance. By identifying specific weaknesses and addressing them strategically, we can transform them into opportunities for improvement without diminishing our self-worth.

Personal growth requires a thoughtful approach that strikes a balance between embracing strengths and addressing weaknesses. Strengthening the skills we already possess empowers us to reach new heights, find passion and purpose, and cultivate a positive mindset. However, it is equally important to recognize areas that need improvement, ensuring we grow into well-rounded individuals. By embracing both aspects of our journey, we can unleash our true potential and achieve a fulfilling and successful life.
